Week Film School Hulu was 7: Post-production

Hosted picture and video by servimg.com

In an interview with NPR, the famous editor Walter Murch (Godfather Trilogy, Apocalypse Now) described his work as "a cross between a short and a cooking brain surgeon."

The job of an editor is very complex. Pastors as the last movie, reorganize, splice, cut, shape and rushes to mood, tension and structure of the film to breathe. Under the direction of a great editor checks frameless, without contribution - either in action or filmmaking -. Goes in this last week of the Summer Film School Hulu underestimated to investigate these unsung heroes, such as celebrating carry the film through the final stages of production.

The film report of fluid travels, Chris Marker Sans Soleil explores the changing nature of memory, time and their effect on our perception of history. With techniques elliptical editing wedding documentary found footage, sends the film to us living cityscape marking Tokyo in the jungles of Guinea-Bissau in Africa in the alien landscape of Iceland, and Back in Japan, where we attended a religious ceremony in honor of cats. With all this splendor, Sans Soleil free of synchronous sound and used an invisible narrator (reading the diary of a fictional travel camera man who took the pictures that we see caught) that the binding force of matter. The synthesis of writing sight and sound simultaneously is sustainable and ephemeral, like someone trying to remember - and re-experience - a distant memory.

Later in the film, Marker shows his affection for Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, which ". Impossible memory, insane memory" on it as an attempt to discover a The memory and time wind up in an endless spiral as a marker present images of Vertigo puts images always stay in San Francisco, to recreate scenes from Hitchcock. Output is sharp and precise alignment in a frame on his plan Vertigo live-action corresponding Without the sun, while the narrator draws a comparative deconstruction of Hitchcock movie, the inability to "live with the memory without distorting them into question . "memory is a type of personal armor that protects us from the harsh injustices of objective truth and allows us - both as a filmmaker and the audience - to rewrite history, as required by the needs of the present.

2) Breathless

Be the first feature film by Jean-Luc Godard breath revolutionized the way films processed. He made the jump cut a viable option to compress the narrative time. The plot is very informed by the popular film culture before 1960: a young bat is on the trail of the police with his American girlfriend. But the energy of the film has little to do with the plot and everything was shot with the way the film is loose and the endless invention of film editing.

Consider Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and is removed from the beginning of the movie car in a robbery in this clip. Not to keep jumping dishes continuity of time and space, but it is an emotional logic of Michel tear through France. The film forces the viewer to see how Michael sees himself (as cool, but playful, full of energy and passion) and Godard's style is like the crazy movie stream of consciousness - that is the recognized life as it is, or at least the way we like to be in the eyes of our mind.

Landscapes 3) Manufacturer

More than any other genre is reflected in the editing room, the structure of the film. In a typical production documentation, hundreds of hours of footage and then the content editor that has some 90 minutes to reduce.

A witness documentary processing in the manufactured by Jennifer Baichwal landscapes in which Baichwal follows Edward Burtynsky Photographer captures diverse as the world were to be seen shaped by the landscapes of industrial production. One of the many stunning shots of the film is a shot of the Chinese production workers lining up to take control of their managers. The spacious underscores the strength of identically dressed workers and also serves to highlight the lack of individualism in the room. This plan will be followed by a cut to Burtynsky photo of the event, then cut to Burtynsky photo in a gallery space with visitors who correspond meet through it. This sequence represents the ability Baichwal output Transcend not only time but also space. As a result, viewers a better understanding of the power of images to the social and economic Burtynsky communicate situations for the rest of the world.

4) Primer

In "First", two scientists accidentally discover time travel, and this affects your life slowly, over and over again. It is fast paced but slow and dark, and completely immersive.

In this clip, Aaron and Abe learn that time travel can happen right under their noses. As both try to understand what happened to make, the amount is nervous, hectic and a little incoherent, which corresponds to the activity of the brain. But as we agree that that processing slows, so that we get to spend a little more time with each shot to the conclusion. This gives our unconscious mind some space again - a way of saying, "we moved here," as the characters in the story.

Having adopted the Cut

Famous editor Sergei Eisenstein, to work on his latest movie. As you can probably see, he took his job very seriously.

When putting together a puzzle, each piece is part of a predetermined set. There is a picture on the box, and that's what you get. If you have more space and the image of the games, you know you are.

With question is not so simple.

Carefully selected plans, camera movement and all shows end up in the same place, the proverbial puzzle box, ready to be set by the publisher. Was released to the movie, the story was taken up has been (probably custom) not say that! . The editor is as much a storyteller as a writer, and control many aspects of the film, including:

Tempo: change sets the pace of a scene. Quick cuts and cuts that do not conform to enhance the feeling of intensity. The action sequences and crazy chases are known for many quick cuts - they go a long way! But something as simple as a family discussion about the dinner can be an intense war during processing leads us to the table.

Act and react: They say "action responds," and the question is not strikingly different from white, it is important to see a sign, how they talk, but it's almost more important to see how. other characters to react! An experienced editor can mix a movement response time and adjust various recordings, sometimes to create different lines.

In his book "In a wink," Academy Award-winning editor Walter Murch speaks of "the piece of blackboard," before the board small film shot and call the "action". During this twenty-second piece of film was never in the movie, maybe the actor had the right expression on his face. Murch says that all caught on film is fair game for editing.

Continuity: We've all seen Flubs continuity errors, missing things in line, etc. We believe that we are smart enough to realize. Believe it or not, these types of errors found in the bottom of the list of importance to a publisher. When choosing between an amazing performance by an actor or make sure that the lamp in the background does not move, the editor uses the power at all times.

The bottom of the chamber cut: Not every time, is in the film. Perhaps that you took the driving and a half, who liked the director simply do not work. Perhaps the actor is trying to focus, to disturb the feeling of the scene. It is the responsibility of the publisher to be separated from Upper situations, and use the pieces that were given to telling a story in the best way possible.

And ... that's a Wrap!

The question is abstract and virtually unlimited. Choose tempo and shot power is a great responsibility of the narrative. The films are made or broken in the editing room. The next time you see a movie, try to pay attention to the cuts - you will probably find it to be forgotten quickly and they find themselves back in history. Big problem affects us on a subconscious level and disappears in the film.

Dolls as "entertainment" is a polarizing topic among passionate fans, but there is no denying that the gameplay is deep rooted in the simple concept of animation artists encourage inanimate objects to tell a story. As in film and traditional pencil paper, this effect is not only scenes that were "learned", but also by the sounds and movements of objects in order to create the illusion that everything achieved real.

Operatively with Jim Henson puppets, hand manipulates the head and mouth, while the other manipulates the hands and arms. For this reason, the faces of the dolls are to remain static when the emotion is predominantly expressed by tone of voice and arm movements. With his powerful voice and aggressive arm movements, we can say that Miss Piggy is stormy; Kermit is affable, because their permanent thoughtful eyes and gentle movements.

"Muppet" characters from Jim Henson is a final example of the use in the films puppets. In "The Muppets Manhattan conquer" to take the group of blurred characters with large eyes, to the streets of New York. With the magical doll, sing these leather items, dance, and feel sadness and happiness, and experience what it means to work in Diners, broke and with failed dreams in the big city.

The secrets of animation: an exploration of the basic principles behind the Secret of Kells

Whether your interests are in CG or stop-motion, traditional 2D or puppet, there is a famous set of 12 principles in the center used to give the illusion all these forms of life. Powered by Disney animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, is to cultivate the goal of these principles to realism and style. Examine their use in selecting film Summer School Hulu, The Secret of Kells.

The Secret of Kells tells the story of Brendan, a young monk in search of a legendary crystal that can be used to complete the Book of Kells.

1) Squash and Stretch - Squash and Stretch is the expansion and compression of the body of a figure to create the illusion of weight and volume. In this scene, compression and extension is used to determine how the two mentors brother and brother Brendan Tang Assoua, differ not only in height but also in the way their bodies move to form expressions.

2) Expectation - Facilitators use the public early preparation for future action. In this scene Brendan slope goose falls out before you, to make the book the line.

3) Manager - That is the concept that every attitude or action that takes a character must clearly communicate goals, attitude, mood, reaction or a sign. Compare these images of Brendan different scenes. Watch as each position is different from the other and expresses a clear emotion. If you were to make a silhouette of the pose of the character, you will still be able to say that they have different poses.

4) Straight Ahead and Pose to Pose - to process more than the product related, this principle highlights the two main methods of producing animation: to make straight and pose. Animation in a straight line is very popular in stop-motion animation. In this process, the facilitator will lead a frame at a time, in chronological order. Pose to Pose is to create key poses below, then add in the average "load" is.

Pose to Pose: To promote this scene from The Secret of Kells, leaders first developed for these key positions Brendan and his mentor, Brother Aidan, and then went to the site to other animation studios in Brussels, Belgium, Brazil, Hungary and fill action between these positions.

Straight Ahead: On the contrary, according to the 2012 ParaNorman, stop-motion animation used LAIKA production process in a straight line, moving his numbers a little, take a picture, and repeating again society (this is gif a period ParaNorman how. animators Norman was able to live.)

5) Follow through actions and accumulation - follow through on the idea that when a character stops or perform an action, continue to move their body parts at different times. This is a little hard to see, but if you look closely, you will notice that when the magic forest fairy Aisling jumps, lands on a rock body, but her hair still for some pictures progress.

Linked to the idea by following covert action. This concept assumes that if the body moves, inevitably some parts move faster than others. In this scene, to take note, as the philosophers Colum Cille arm poles move faster than the rest of the body rhythm.

6) slow and fast slow - Most action framework it seems a delaying action. Images appear less action there is, in addition to the action. Therefore, during the animation of an action scene, animators add more drawings of the parts of the plot, less halfway, and towards the end, creating the effect of a slow and a slow start. In this scene out as the action seems to slow down when the bell the highest and the bottom of its arc and is accelerated when the bell in the center of the arc.

7) Arcs - Almost every action in life have an expiration anything circulate around them. And often encourage presenters share an arcuate path. Sometimes this principle can be exaggerated to add appeal to the character, as in this stunning animation curvature Aisling hair!

8) A second action - This is an action that helps to complete the main action of a scene. For example, in the scene where Brendan foot, movement of the legs and feet of the character are the most important measures, while the movement of the arm, head and body movements of the character are subtle secondary actions in the scene.

9) Distribution - The integration of different designs in the area of influence, is a host to be able to imitate the laws of physics to produce a slow, flowing movements or sudden, rapid movements, as seen here.

10) The exaggeration - Add exaggeration includes the extension of the facial features of his character poses and expressions to a better understanding of their movements. Therefore, the principle of exaggeration, it is clear to the public that this goose is horrified!

11) Hard drawings - This principle postulates that the basic ideas of traditional design in context, it should also be applied in the world of entertainment. This character sheet shows how artists designed cat Pangur Ban brother Aidan, taking into account the different positions the character and outlook that can be described.

12) Call - This concept is difficult to define, but easy to identify. In other words, the claim relates to the idea that the images should be able to develop a connection with the audience. This does not necessarily mean that the image should be cute and cuddly, but the screen activities of public interest. In The Secret of Kells, the filmmakers used a variety of different shapes and textures to inspire the public, including the magnificent triptych tuning.

With the 12 principles of animation, is the secret of Kells able not only believable, but also to achieve a fascinating history. For more information about the process that went into the creation and the secret of Kells, visit the Secret of Kells official blog and wiki page.
