Dodge City VIP

A brief memory of John Lehr, alias Sheriff Hoyle

Dodge City, Kansas invited my co-creator Nancy and I are going to the party of Dodge City Days Rodeo. The last time I was in Dodge, I was 10 and had no idea what to expect this time. Quick Draw is a yes, but it was a nervous little comedy edition west made me a little nervous. It would tar and feather the city and we were pulled from the ankles? We were shocked that it is anything but. Frankly, it was the best experience of an event that I've ever had. If you do not to Dodge, you get your ass there. Speaking of butts, worked our to basics. Here is a brief reminder.

Here I explain to a mother why her son saw an episode of Quick Draw, which included a vibrator steam. You can not see her husband, who is just outside the frame ... loading a shotgun. Yes, I wear a cowboy hat and a pink shirt. I turned style Urban Cowboy. In all honesty, she had no idea who I was, and am wondering borrow my pen.

Here I'm getting ready to drive a herd of longhorn cattle in Dodge City. The man to my left is Buck Taylor, the star of the classic western Gunsmoke. Gunsmoke lasted 20 years. QUICK DRAW begins its second season. That's why Buck is the white horse and deer. My equipment was bought for me thirty minutes before this photo. My horse is trying to attract someone's attention, as if he say? "Really so small"

It was a great time for me. Believe it or not, I'm actually recorded located in the Hall of Fame Wild West, near Hill Casino and Resort Boot, which organizes the event. Larry, the man who is responsible for the operation, but do not tell me that lava used instead of cement for unknown reasons.

This time warmed my heart. Yes, like me, Nancy is still paralyzed by lava, but hell, she's officially in the Hall of Fame! I told Nancy to wear this hat Quick Draw one-of-a-kind for it again with a cowboy. It worked. Nancy edited the show, but now it is the finger that we have to find someone else.

And the love flows maintained. Here I am at the top of the cemetery outside the notorious law. I opened Boot Hill as an official Honorary Marshal Dodge City. Hell yes. My partner is honored Johnny Crawford star of The Rifleman. Law of mine is Brent Harris, the face of Dodge City, or drunk man fell from the stage. Just do not. And before you poo this price you need to know some other fees quarterbacks: JFK, Ronald Regan, Duke Ellington and Johnny Cash. Nice.

Thank Dodge City !!!

3 weeks Summer Film School Hulu: color theory and lighting

Image and video hosting by servimg.com
Greetings Summer Film School student Hulu! One of the most powerful tools in the arsenal of a filmmaker is his lighting set. For light and color, the photography is able to enhance the mood of a scene and draw the viewer into the world of nature. Even subtle changes in light or color can give ordinary objects a whole new meaning. Explore the role of light and color by the following visual masterpieces.

Mandatory display:

1) The Red Balloon

Camera: Edmond Séchan
Win both an Oscar for best screenplay (original screenplay) and the Palme d'Or for best short film in 1956, is The Red Balloon Albert Lamorisse wrote and directed one of the most popular films of all time children. Its elegant and almost wordless story, tells the story of a young man named Pascal and whimsical world as they navigate through the streets of Paris. From the outset, it is clear Pascal (and the public) that the ball has a will of its own - that is playful and surprisingly tough - as an adventure through the city attracts pair confused looks from adults and the envious racket the local neighborhood.

More than your traditional photography Paris, Lamorisse and his chief of Edmond Séchan Beauty focus on the gray of the city, highlighting the contrast of the wet roads and building for the brightness of the bright red sphere. Lamorisse made the action so that the ball is still bobbing in the middle of the viewer's attention, and weaving fabrics background glorious past, as it happens about Pascal. In a memorable and pleasant scene, Pascal and his red balloon pass by a girl with her own ball, blue. As Pascal retains foot red balloon floats with the girl and began to "flirt" with his blue ball in front of Pascal finally manages to play again.

The film takes a darker turn when the neighborhood bullies trap catch Pascal and his red balloon, subjecting to abuse, at the end of a noose. But this change of tone is because it is important in a magical end which is not spoiled here. Ballon Rouge realized rarefied air, the essence of childhood innocence, sadness and joy on this little screen.

2) Eraserhead

Directed by Herbert Cardwell and Frederick Elmes
Debut of David Lynch is a surreal meditation on the anxieties of parenthood, living in a alienating and dehumanizing world, and feels in a life that is primarily for the tragedy is captured. Photo strict and simple black and white, high contrast lighting to create a world outside of reality. Eraserhead could establish formal comparisons with other works, and may have influences that its technical performance, but the film is timeless in its depiction of Henry (Jack Nance) and Mary (Charlotte Stewart), as she. giving birth to a child who seems to be totally blind

Help The camera work and lighting Eraserhead to one, visually appealing, and safer visceral portrait of an abstraction they always put on celluloid and for that alone, has a place in film history.

Christopher Rowe

3) Electrick Children

Camera: Mattias Troelstrup
A critical favorite at SXSW 2012 Electrick Children tells the story of a young Mormon fundamentalist, he has been impregnated by a rock and companies Vegas to find song singer of the band, she believes that her baby's father thinks he is. While it strange that most intrigue, innocent idealism of our main character, along with the symbolic use of color film and light to the whole a bit more plausible process can make it appear "tape cassette pregnant", is by first.

Throughout the film is set a stark contrast between the landscape and Rachel compound campaign sprawl of Las Vegas. Photography Mattias Troelstrup advantage of the natural light of the country and gives each part a subtle to reflect a sense of comfort, even boredom with the environment desaturation. The soft classification provides a perfect contrast to the subsequent experience of Rachel in Las Vegas, a world of light and great personalities. There is nothing glamorous classical musicians and lazy "Bummin that" Lifestyle Rachel is in her Vegas adventure, but through their eyes unexposed film and the subsequent interpretation of the Troelstrup, everything is in a blaze of Technicolor bathed the child's wonder that Rachel feels to reflect this new world.

Lighting "person"

Editor's note: This summer, Hulu, that behind the scenes to explore some of your favorite films, filmmakers how to use elements such as sound, camera and lighting to tell powerful stories and create moments that are unforgettable. To celebrate the lighting and color theory week summer film school Hulu is happy to give you a position of special guest editor Michael Koresky Criterion Collection. Visit the website for more specific about the person and work of cinematographer Sven Nykvist.

In other words, the film is easy. Each print in every movie you have seen in the first experiment by Thomas Edison to the latest Hollywood blockbuster movie, is not possible without illuminating sunlight. The camera lens, a device for collecting light. So light and more abstract concept of time is what defines the art of cinema and sets them apart from other media such as music, literature and theater-like alignment with color. It is therefore important to pay attention to the choice of lighting in a particular movie and see how they show about the characters in this film, the story and artistic point of view in general. Look closer as the movie you see is what you get.

One of the greatest filmmakers of the cinema, a true sculptor of light, Sven Nykvist was. He has worked with directors as diverse as Woody Allen, Nora Ephron, Bob Fosse, Philip Kaufman, Louis Malle, Bob Rafelson, and Andrei Tarkovsky, but is primarily known for his collaborations with other Swede Ingmar Bergman. And maybe none of the projects together more in the eyes lit his extraordinary film 1966 Persona. This is a master class in the art of lighting for film, most of the photographs something sharp and specificity expresses the human condition. This story, a Elisabet (Liv Ullmann) actress who one day decides to stop talking, and the nurse Alma (Bibi Andersson), assigned to care for him, is so convincing was visually still observed with sound and subtitle out communicate both.

Nykvist, said in an interview:

"I rarely take the time to study the light. Is also important that the lines the actors speak, or defined. Actual part of the story, and that is why such coordination between the director is not required. Filmmaker and light is a treasure: once understood, can a new dimension in the meantime to bring. "

Individual features of this feeling, and everywhere, but also shows the variety of ways a filmmaker can illuminate a scene of constant resulting emotional impact. In one scene lighting is hard or soft, natural or ghostly, realistic or surreal; Lighting can come from the front or from behind, can fill a room, or simply highlight some corners. It is a visual tour de force, it is not surprising that the original script Bergman camera.

One of the most famous images of the person is at the beginning, tucked away in a very short time prologue to the story correctly. To use A boy talking with elusive great images of the two main characters in the film. This is an example of high-key lighting, which usually comes from three sources and minimizes shadows to create the same look. In this case, the child seems wise and innocent.

Instead, look great when reverse insertion Elizabeth stops talking, during a stage performance of Electra. It is dramatic foreground to eat pained expression on the screen, but his face is half in shadow, making it a mysterious quality. This technique, which means that there are two faces to the light and dark is a recurring theme in the whole film.

Sometimes the light can be adjusted and played during a recording for dramatic effect, as in this intense first Elisabet lying in his hospital bed level, the main source of growth is darkening up 'covers almost shadow.

Light can come from anywhere around the course and how the atmosphere of a scene is subtly altered. Here Elisabet watching violent television news segment in his hospital room and down lights, what are the aesthetic scene from a horror movie.

Priorities for lighting a sign to another can create an implicit drama and tell a lot about character. In this scene Elizabeth is in the shade, even if it is, while a psychologist is uniformly illuminated at the clinic in the background at the top of the shooting. Since the doctor speaks harshly to her, she accused intentionally touched by a patient, this light emphasizes the bad doctor cold and denial of Elizabeth.

In contrast, later, when Elizabeth and Alma went to the summer house on the island when the first recovered, Bergman and Nykvist often illuminate and Elizabeth are the visual focus of a scene. It is fascinating because, as a mute, which is always the listener, while Alma always babbling about. Our focus is on the subtle facial responses Elisabet used liabilities. In this scene there is a light source Elisabet diegetic, serves as a bedside lamp, make them the center of attention, while Bibi has its dramatic history.

In another of the most famous scenes of the film, Elisabet Alma space for what appears to be approaches in the early morning. This is an example of soft light, so diffuse that it looks like a dream; the background light source is so sweet, in fact, seems to materialize Elizabeth and again dissolve back into the light.

Of course, a good old splendor of the sunlight, the produce directly to the camera a wildly dramatic natural effect.

At one point we see profiles of women near silhouette. This is because the main light source here is the light of the hard floor, facing the camera.

This is a particularly flat first half in shadow, celebrities are calling Persona 's The level of this showdown between Alma and Elisabet from a series of amazing photographs of the faces of women around assembled, but spans the darkness.

Nykvist says that in person:

"One of the most difficult tasks for me was the light affected close-ups so amazing shade because it is very me in the light of important, so you can feel it behind the eyes of a character. Again my goal is to capture light in his eyes, because I think they are the mirror of the soul. The truth is in the eyes of the actor and very small changes in the expression can be more than a thousand words. "
