The secrets of animation: an exploration of the basic principles behind the Secret of Kells

Whether your interests are in CG or stop-motion, traditional 2D or puppet, there is a famous set of 12 principles in the center used to give the illusion all these forms of life. Powered by Disney animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, is to cultivate the goal of these principles to realism and style. Examine their use in selecting film Summer School Hulu, The Secret of Kells.

The Secret of Kells tells the story of Brendan, a young monk in search of a legendary crystal that can be used to complete the Book of Kells.

1) Squash and Stretch - Squash and Stretch is the expansion and compression of the body of a figure to create the illusion of weight and volume. In this scene, compression and extension is used to determine how the two mentors brother and brother Brendan Tang Assoua, differ not only in height but also in the way their bodies move to form expressions.

2) Expectation - Facilitators use the public early preparation for future action. In this scene Brendan slope goose falls out before you, to make the book the line.

3) Manager - That is the concept that every attitude or action that takes a character must clearly communicate goals, attitude, mood, reaction or a sign. Compare these images of Brendan different scenes. Watch as each position is different from the other and expresses a clear emotion. If you were to make a silhouette of the pose of the character, you will still be able to say that they have different poses.

4) Straight Ahead and Pose to Pose - to process more than the product related, this principle highlights the two main methods of producing animation: to make straight and pose. Animation in a straight line is very popular in stop-motion animation. In this process, the facilitator will lead a frame at a time, in chronological order. Pose to Pose is to create key poses below, then add in the average "load" is.

Pose to Pose: To promote this scene from The Secret of Kells, leaders first developed for these key positions Brendan and his mentor, Brother Aidan, and then went to the site to other animation studios in Brussels, Belgium, Brazil, Hungary and fill action between these positions.

Straight Ahead: On the contrary, according to the 2012 ParaNorman, stop-motion animation used LAIKA production process in a straight line, moving his numbers a little, take a picture, and repeating again society (this is gif a period ParaNorman how. animators Norman was able to live.)

5) Follow through actions and accumulation - follow through on the idea that when a character stops or perform an action, continue to move their body parts at different times. This is a little hard to see, but if you look closely, you will notice that when the magic forest fairy Aisling jumps, lands on a rock body, but her hair still for some pictures progress.

Linked to the idea by following covert action. This concept assumes that if the body moves, inevitably some parts move faster than others. In this scene, to take note, as the philosophers Colum Cille arm poles move faster than the rest of the body rhythm.

6) slow and fast slow - Most action framework it seems a delaying action. Images appear less action there is, in addition to the action. Therefore, during the animation of an action scene, animators add more drawings of the parts of the plot, less halfway, and towards the end, creating the effect of a slow and a slow start. In this scene out as the action seems to slow down when the bell the highest and the bottom of its arc and is accelerated when the bell in the center of the arc.

7) Arcs - Almost every action in life have an expiration anything circulate around them. And often encourage presenters share an arcuate path. Sometimes this principle can be exaggerated to add appeal to the character, as in this stunning animation curvature Aisling hair!

8) A second action - This is an action that helps to complete the main action of a scene. For example, in the scene where Brendan foot, movement of the legs and feet of the character are the most important measures, while the movement of the arm, head and body movements of the character are subtle secondary actions in the scene.

9) Distribution - The integration of different designs in the area of influence, is a host to be able to imitate the laws of physics to produce a slow, flowing movements or sudden, rapid movements, as seen here.

10) The exaggeration - Add exaggeration includes the extension of the facial features of his character poses and expressions to a better understanding of their movements. Therefore, the principle of exaggeration, it is clear to the public that this goose is horrified!

11) Hard drawings - This principle postulates that the basic ideas of traditional design in context, it should also be applied in the world of entertainment. This character sheet shows how artists designed cat Pangur Ban brother Aidan, taking into account the different positions the character and outlook that can be described.

12) Call - This concept is difficult to define, but easy to identify. In other words, the claim relates to the idea that the images should be able to develop a connection with the audience. This does not necessarily mean that the image should be cute and cuddly, but the screen activities of public interest. In The Secret of Kells, the filmmakers used a variety of different shapes and textures to inspire the public, including the magnificent triptych tuning.

With the 12 principles of animation, is the secret of Kells able not only believable, but also to achieve a fascinating history. For more information about the process that went into the creation and the secret of Kells, visit the Secret of Kells official blog and wiki page.

Although the design of the global garment Ghostbusters used skillfully in general as a way to reveal the character (sarcastically Venkman, for example, she dresses like a substitute teacher neglected), the most beautiful garment is clearly consistent Ghostbusters worker and his weapon, the proton clusters. The uniform is the work of costume designer and Suzy Benzinger Theoni Aldrege, while the Proton Pack - equal parts of clothing and accessories - was created by John DeCuir and production design team.

The Ghostbuster blue uniform transmit the work ethic of the crew neck and is comparable to that of a caretaker or exterminator celebration. Also, the packaging design proton seems improvised, as if it made in a garage in hiking equipment and castings of nuclear reactors. After all, better to bring something to pull down spirits stupid chains positron iridescent particles (the negative energy of the ectoplasmic spirits naturally counteract). It is the combination of costumes and accessories are identity Ghostbusters and arrogance, to create inspiring many followers on the versions of home.

The costumes in computer chess achieved many goals that are seemingly at odds with each other. The costumes are discrete and clear enough to the suspension of disbelief, who believe for a viewer further, that this is the "real life" is recorded for documentation purposes, but increased enough to give the impression that the characters are "types" - caricatures you (or nightmare) know in a dream. The costumes are correctly set in the 1980s, to a sense of authenticity and timeless enough to create the spirit of true nerd calls. It's all there in the vessels and expressions Patrick Reister: the world as you know, and the world that you previously only dreamed in all its mundane and strange, ridiculous glory.

Valley girls and abroad Hunks: Costumes Cool Earth Girls Are Easy

Earth Girls Are Easy (1988) starring Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum (who is also husband and wife were at the time!) As a Valley Girl Manicure sweet and beautiful foreigner who fall in love after UFO crash in your pool. Valerie (Geena) works in a beauty salon called "Curl Up and Dye," I always thought it was the coolest place for the name of a hair. A quick search on Google revealed that many other people feel the same way, because the halls of Las Vegas to Bakersfield in Texas operate under the same clever pun! When Valerie discovers her boyfriend loses interest, she turns to her salon patrons, Rose Bonbon (the iconic Julie Brown, who also wrote the film), which translates into one of the funniest scenes montage makeover exist. While I agree with sugar insistence that blondes have more fun ...

Transformations were a recurring theme in the film. Guys exotic skin necessary to found in their environment on Earth, so they went from that integrate:

IN THIS!

(Many of us whose first love was Jeff Goldblum maaaay was because of this movie, just sayin '.)

Stage is set for costumes, Earth Girls is a visual feast for those of us who embrace the color in colossal amounts, both in our personal wardrobe and interior design. Costume designer Linda Bass and designer Dennis Gassner made sure that their two respective worlds are the perfect combination of pastel colors and geometric shapes. "80 No 50" is a topic that a lot has seen in that time, and he has many appearances in film, retro candy colored kitchens black cotton Heaven knows high beehive hairstyle Valerie her nosy neighbor, sweets and mini skirt striped bra, all Your lungs' Cause I'm a blonde "with his flock of sheep on the beach and contributes bros.

Although the film is made for more than two decades, most of the characters costumes loving fashion Tumblrs could possibly be seen today. Go anywhere fashion clothing like Nasty Gal and dolls deaths and probably find some outfits that easily by Julie Brown Candy could have been used. The heart-shaped door Valerie trash bag? The outstanding credit card an additional sorority? These two accessories can 100 people on Instagram today at least!

Nail Design has accumulated an incredible amount of popularity in recent years, so it is fun, the close-ups of 80 nail art style scenes showbiz see. Valerie certainly would have as an artist instead of a nail manicure when EGAE came today. The film also features a cameo appearance by LA billboard queen Angelyne, whose frequent appearances are of their behavior around its still there (but likely successor) pink Camaro in the city almost as a sign of good luck residents of Los Angeles. Such devotion to a signature color should be applauded!

Earth Girls Are Easy is probably the perfect place for those who are obsessed with the film Camp, color and crazy games and costumes instead. You can also see the style of the early comic Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans played cronies Goldbum aliens! Even the first movie had cast their votes in fantastic costumes:

3) M

Sound Designer / Director: Fritz Lang
Released at the beginning of the conversion of silent films sounds, Fritz Lang's M is a master class on how to use sound to reflect the internal state of a character. In this case, the character whose mind we enter is Hans Beckert, a child murderer who whistles "In the Hall of the Mountain King" whenever he was on the hunt for his next victim. In one memorable scene, are the sounds of a busy street soundscape Beckert circling the neighborhood. Suddenly, all that spoiled our quiet observation of the thinking of a child and the window is overcome with desire. It is as if the view of the dam caused all his people come to a standstill. When the child begins to walk, the sound is not cut and suddenly we returned to the sonic horns and traces of the city. Although M is a sound film, these pockets of silence that draws its force.

Lady in the radiator song composed and sung by Peter Ivers
Obsessive love for David Lynch for his evident throughout his work, and this is especially true in his first feature film Eraserhead. Lynch To the sounds of a film is as important as your images. Sounds include everything from the surreal music in the diegetic noise ornaments and paintings of abstract soundscapes. Children of Eraserhead paint a portrait of his vague dystopian world. The Adventures of Henry through a barren landscape from wind supplements and groans, the foreign industrial wasteland before. When Henry unravels psychologically sound design Lynch built a disturbing crescendo, a technique often used in the following movies (see: the decline of Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me or the last episode of Mulholland Drive). Eraserhead also led the integration perfect song with the story as a psychologically insightful device. When the lady in the radiator song "In Heaven," is a great musical number, cathartic, whose strange beauty seems surreal images fill the film with their actual emotional states.
